Week 3, 2007
The bougainvillea adds a splash of color to the terrace of Didi’s house in Silchar. The block of flats could do with a coat of paint and the roads could do with a layer of tar, but this is still one of the better parts of town. Silchar hasn’t seen much development over the last two decades, which is the story of most of southern Assam anyway.
This was one of those accidental shots which turn out surprisingly nice. I was playing around with my nephew’s Canon PowerShot SD700 when this mouldy flower pot and the bright purple petals presented a beautiful contrast. It’s probably the best point-and-shoot in the market today, but I prefer my Nikon D50 over it any day.
A bright sunny January day in Silchar. After staying in dark gloomy western Washington for any length of time, you really begin to appreciate the simple joys of good weather. Laundry lines against a blue sky always presents a pretty picture…though my photograph probably doesn’t do justice to it.
Spider silk has five times the tensile strength of an equivalent thread of steel. Even a simple orb web such as this is a fascinating example of efficient design.
Taking a picture of the web in broad daylight was difficult. I was actually waiting for the spider to get back to the center so that I could go for a macro. Ultimately that didn’t work out. So I just opted for the correct angle to get the web to catch the light against a relatively darker background.
